Far-Left protesters have descended on at least four major UK cities tonight amid fears of far-Right thugs causing chaos.

Protests had been planned for up to 100 different UK locations on Wednesday night according to reports, with police mobilised on several major cities such as Sheffield, Manchester, Birmingham and Hull tonight ready to crack down on violence, arson and looting in the wake of the Southport stabbings.

But so far demos have been made up of only far-Left protesters in several locations. In Bristol, more than 2,000 counter-protesters have gathered, waving signs which say ‘fascists not welcome’ and ‘Bristol welcomes refugees’.

The crowd chanting ‘say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here’ has been steadily growing through the evening.

In Liverpool, anti-fascist protesters have climbed in front of the Asylum Link building and are ‘symbolically defending it, with more than 500 anti-far right protesters gathered. One sign says ‘refugees welcome here’, and people at the protest are being warned not to wear face masks by police.

In Newcastle, protesters have been seen holding up signs saying ‘Newcastle – Black + White + Proud”, while another says “Geordies are of all colours.”

In Bristol one person was arrested for breach of the peace but has now been ‘de arrested’ say Avon and Somerset Police, and there has not yet been any reports of violence or arson in any of the counter demos.

In Birmingham, counter fascist protesters have descended on the Jewellery Quarter. There are some protesters in masks and others holding placards saying ‘refugees welcome’.

Police have shown a strong presence in Walthamstow, Birmingham, Sheffield, Bristol, Manchester and Derby over fears violence could escalate. So far, counter-protestors have arrived in anticipation of the far-right causing trouble.

Roads and streets across the UK, where 100 protests and 30 counter-protests were planned, have so far remained free from violence. Out of the 43 police forces in England and Wales, all but two are expecting events, with more than 6,000 specialist officers mobilised.
