Ukraine hit during a drone attack launched on September 10 a Russian TOS 1-A Solntsepyok as it prepared to launch, while the battle for the town of Chasiv Yar rages on.

Chasiv Yar, in the imperilled region of Donetsk, has seen heavy fighting in recent months as Ukraine struggles to hold back the Russian advance despite its success in the Russian Kursk region.

The Telegram footage, which has not been independently verified, saw FPV drones strike the Russian multiple rocket launcher system (MRLS), which according to some reports cost around £4.97m, as it prepared to launch thermobaric missiles.

The video showed several drones hit the weapon system which lay motionless with smoke billowing in the aftermath.

Ukrainian aerial intelligence officers told Kyiv Post that, “at least four drones were used to target and immobilise the flamethrower system, a common tactic that is used to ensure a ‘kill’.”

One Ukrainian aerial scout also claimed: “Multiple drones immobilise the target, and others try to destroy it. Sometimes the drone reaches the target, but the target has already escaped.”

Chasiv Yar is a strategic location that has long been a strategic objective for Russian forces.

Ukraine’s invasion of the Kursk region was seen by many as an attempt to force Russia to divert forces away from areas in the Donbas but thus far, Russia has resisted temptation to do so.

The town, which had a pre-war population of 14,000 is said to have been reduced to rubble by social media users, in a similar way to the destruction seen in places such as Bahkmut and Mariupol in the midst of clashes between Ukrainian and Russian troops.

The attack on the MRLS comes as Ukraine attempts to lobby the US and UK to ease restrictions on how they can use missiles provided by the country.

Currently the missiles can only be used in a defensive capacity which limits Ukraine’s ability to strike deep behind the frontline and disrupt infrastructure and logistics crucial to the war effort.
